Artist Statement

“.. the body is not just an object of study, it also is what performs the study.”

– Lars Frers, “The matter of absence”

Through subjective rituals and internal and external travel, in the ideal the self is under labour to itself; to transform and explore the layers of the potentially expanding body and mind. The nature of my work is based on the exploration of the known and unknown notions of appetence within the self; to explore and experiment with the volatile space between the mental and physical world and to measure and visualize a state of mind through the body.

Reflected in images, installations and live performance, is the attempt to conjure transformation of the self, and the viewers, through experience and the exploration of my own identity and belonging through the corporeal body; to see and create the body as the string, the catalyst that moves and react in the context of space, time and vibration. Between my live performances and the digital assimilate I am on an amaranthine search for sophrosyne; the essence of one’s true self.

To engage with the constant seeking I conjure an intimate relationship with the texture of material and objects, leading to amplification of self and the possibility to magnify the notion.

In subjective ideology, the artist is responsible for living the given life artistically, to investigate beyond intellect and to push the illusion of limits. The exposing of solitude in my performances derive from intense focus and deep engagement with the action and object. In everyday life, the focus and presence of oneself can often be absent, and through the notion of this my drive is to be the observer and investigator, as much as the engager, in and of my own life. The line of process I take starts at this point; the urge to question my fears and perceive my desires to see myself, the between and beyond. The next step to this process is to create the ritualistic realm where the investigation can materialize.

The desire for intimacy triggers the drive for magnification of different surfaces in the realm we call reality. The process becomes the observation, interaction and notion of texture experienced as abstraction and captured as a wholeness of a fragment. The measurement is abstract onto the point of action, where the thought is transformed into matter. Only then can I as the investigator interact and be physically intimate with the thought and process.

In my image making process I revisit the capturing of an experience to merge and measure it with the present state of mind, where I’m seeking out the details , which is the belief that one can magnify to the point of receiving the essence and the force between the animated memory and the recorded eye. Through my art I attempt to find the essence of self; seeking the abstract and wanting to touch the ephemeral.
